Step 1 Find A Horse
Open up William Hill and your exchange and find a close match between the back and lay odds of any horse. Alternatively you can use Oddsmonkey's Oddsmatcher to filter out Horse Racing, or their Racing Matcher to check the odds on every race.
Generally a horse with odds of 4.0 is more likely to finish second than a horse with odds of 10.0. Bearing in mind the minimum odds of 4, it is therefore a good idea to try and pick horses with odds of between 4.0 and 7.0 to give the best chance of hitting a 2nd place refund.
Step 2: Place Your Back Bet
Place a £10 back bet with William Hill on your chosen horse. Make sure you are making use of your 3 daily odds boosts tokens that William Hill offer every day on horse racing. These will raise your back odds, which in turn which reduce your qualifying loss on each bet, and therefore increase your expected profit.
Step 3 Calculate and Place Your Lay Bet
Using our Calculator or Oddsmonkey's Oddsmatcher, calculate your lay stake and lay this amount at the betting exchange.
Don't forget to factor the new back odds into your lay stake calculation, if you used a William Hill odds boost token.
Step 4 The Outcome
If your horse finishes in any other position that second, then you will just be left with a small qualifying loss. However, if the horse finishes second, and there were at least 4 runners in the race, then you should receive your stake (up to £10) back as cash within one hour of the race finishing. In this case, your profit will be: your stake - your qualifying loss.
Additional Tip - Don't Forget Matchbook!
You may be familiar with using Betfair and Smarkets as your two exchanges.
Definitely consider using Matchbook too, they have some of the best horse racing lay odds, in particular given their 0% commission on all sports for new Matchbook customers.
If you are an existing customer, you will still only pay 1.5% commission on winning lay bets on horse racing.
For example, below is a screenshot of the OddsMonkey OddsMatcher filtered for horse racing and William Hill. As you can see, 8 of the 10 closest odds are with Matchbook:
Until recently, I didn't use Matchbook given I had always been happy with Betfair and Smarkets but I now regularly use Matchbook too to help make some extra profit!
