Royal Ascot Day 4 (Fri) - Extra Places Preview

Extra place offers are an advanced offer that can be very lucrative, in particular during big horse racing festivals.

The Royal Ascot is running until Saturday (18th June). This provides an amazing opportunity to grow your profits through extra places.

Here we provide a rundown of all the extra place offers available on Friday. Plus, a walkthrough of how to take advantage of extra place offers.

Step 1 - Activate Your Outplayed Membership

For this walkthrough, we're going to be using Outplayed's Extra Place Catcher. This incredible tool is essential if you want to maximise your profits from extra place offers.

The Extra Place Catcher compares the odds across the bookies and the exchanges. This finds you the bets which have the lowest qualifying losses and the highest potential profits. It's not worth even attempting to complete extra place offers without such software.

Step 2 - Open The Extra Place Catcher And Set Your Filters

The next step is to open the Extra Place Catcher and to set up suitable filters.

Click on the filters button and you will see lots of different filter options that you can adjust.

I would recommend that you now set the following filters:

• Bookies - select which bookies you want to use for extra place offers. It may be quickest to click 'clear all' and then tick the ones you wish to use.
• Exchanges - of the four betting exchanges available, choose which ones you wish to use for extra places. Note: you are likely to find better matches by using more than one bookie.
• Min + Max Odds - as a beginner to extra places, we would recommend avoiding the strong favourites and big outsiders. So, we would recommend setting the min odds to 3.0 and the max odds to 25.0.

Once you are happy with the filters that you have selected, click 'Apply' and they will be reflected in the extra place catcher.

Step 3 - Choose A Race

Under 'Select Event' choose the race that you want to look at from the dropdown menu.

Whilst we're focused on the Royal Ascot in this post, you'll see that there are lots of extra place races at other horse racing meets today.

Step 4 - Find A Suitable Bet

Once we select a race the Extra Place Catcher then lists all available each-way bets on that race by horse with the smallest qualifying loss.

On this race we can see the horse named ‘Muraad’ has the smallest qualifying loss of -£0.14, then the horse Fox Premier at -£0.89 and so on.

If we click the +50 button next to a horse’s name:

We will get a list of alternative each-way bets on that horse which are available at other bookmakers and betting exchanges:

We can see that we could do each-way bets on Muraad for a 14p qualifying loss at Betfred, SkyBet, Betway and Unibet. The choice is ours thanks to the Extra Place Catcher!

You may have spotted that in the image above, the Extra Place Catcher shows that we are best to lay the win at Betfair Exchange, then lay the place at Smarkets Exchange.

If we go back to the initial results from the Extra Place Catcher now, where we can see multiple horses listed, the other column that we’re interested in for the moment is the Implied Odds (imp odds).

You'll also notice columns showing the qualifying loss if your horse does not finish in an extra place. And the extra place profit shows the profit if the horse does finish in the extra place.

We'll cover how to choose which horses to bet on in the next section.

For now, lets finish off the remaining steps to placing your extra place bet.

Step 5 - Place Your Bets

Using the horse named Muraad as an example, the Extra Place Catcher is telling us that we could now do the following:

• Place a £10 each-way bet stake at Betfred on Muraad to win at odds of 10.0. (Our total stake for this each-way bet would be £20, £10 on Muraad to win and £10 on Muraad to place)
• Place a £9.57 lay stake against Muraad winning at odds of 10.50 at Betfair Exchange (with 5% commission).
• Place a £10.77 lay stake against Muraad placing at odds of 2.60 at Smarkets Exchange.

We can see from the Extra Place Catcher that doing this bet would give us a qualifying loss of £0.14, and a potential profit of £27.86 if Muraad finishes the race in the Extra Place.

And that's it. Once the race has finished, you can use a site like Sporting Life to check the result and see whether your horse finished in an extra place.

Considerations For Choosing Bets

There are loads of different approaches to extra place offers. Typically, members tweak and decide their own approach over time, based upon what works for them.

As a beginner, here are three things that you could think about when deciding which horses to bet on.

Qualifying Losses

Qualifying losses are one of the factors to consider when looking at extra place offers. But, for the beginner they are an excellent benchmark for ensuring you are taking suitable bets. Although this isn’t set in stone, we’d recommend starting off by working roughly on the following qualifying loss amounts:

• £2 each-way stake: A maximum £0.25 QL per horse
• £5 each-way stake: A maximum £0.60 QL per horse

But remember that whilst small qualifying losses are very important, potential profits are a key consideration too. For example a total of £5 QL for a potential profit of £40-£70 on 5 horses in a race is much better than a total of £5 QL for a potential profit of £10-£40 on 5 horses in a race.

Implied Odds

As previously mentioned, implied odds is a very useful value on the Extra Place Catcher.

Implied odds shows the number of times a horse would need to finish in the extra place in order for us to break even.

If a horse has implied odds of 20 we need it to come in the extra-place just once in 20 times for us to break even. If a horse has implied odds of 6.0 we need it to come in the extra-place once in 6 times to break even.

Generally therefore, higher implied odds should offer higher value to us.

One rule that many of our newer members initially use is to only bet on horses with implied odds of:

• 20+ if there is only one extra place available
• 10+ if there is two extra places available

Number Of Runners

Something else to consider is the number of runners in a horse race. In theory, the fewer runners in a race, the better our chances of hitting an extra place.

Lets say you have the choice of a race with 10 runners or a race with 12 runners. There is only one extra place available on both. The 10 runner race should be the better option to focus on.

But, you should also consider the number of extra places on offer. If a 14 horse race has 2 extra places, this should give you better value than if there were 1 extra place in a 10 horse race.

The Multi-Horse Strategy

The multi-horse strategy is based on us each-way betting on as many different horses in the same race as we can. Its a bad idea to bet on too many horses with the same bookmaker. So, we can place bets with different bookmakers that are offering an extra place.

By betting on many horses we should be able to increase our chances that one horse will come in the extra place. If we exclude horses that are strong favourites or big outsiders, we should be able to increase our chances further.

But, we should consider our qualifying losses and potential profits when following this strategy. Don't compromise on your criteria when following the multi-horse strategy. Only bet on horses that meet your qualifying loss or implied odds criteria.
